Intended for infantry use, the all aluminium SPB36 sectional personnel bridge is transported in nine 4 m sections and assembled on site by three personnel in 10 minutes. An earlier version was known as the SPB24 and used six 4 m sections. The bridge can be built to any length and as a floating bridge, for which floats and anchoring devices are required.
Each SPB36 section weighs 40 kg and is carried by two personnel using its retractable handles. When assembled, the bridge is 36 m long and can be launched across a gap by one person using a roller mounted on a small frame. The bridge has a handrail on each side and is only 0.98 m wide. Stretchers can be carried across the bridge by placing them on a two-wheel bogie mounted on the handrails; the stretcher can then be pushed across the bridge by one person. When launching the bridge across water obstacles a small pontoon can be fitted to the leading-edge. It is possible to pack up to six bridge sections together with a launching pontoon for transport by truck or other vehicle, including a Jeep-towed two-wheel trailer platform.
The SPB36 has been tested by the US Army.
