Выношу из старого поста танки Шерман, вооружённые 105-мм гаубицей М4; в Израиле данные машины обозначались Шерман М-4. Известно, что партия из 30 гаубичных Шерманов была куплена в Италии; первые машины прибыли в ноябре 1948-го. Однако это были танки со свалки металлолома - с выведенными из строя орудиями (сняты затворы, просверлены отверстия в стволах), некомплектные и скорее всего с различныи неисправностями. Если я ничего не пропустил, Брезнер впервые упоминает сабж на службе только когда доходит до 1950-х. 6 таких машин полагалось по штату каждому танковому батальону. Соответственно, в середине 1954-го было принято решение о ремонте 18 из имевшихся неисправных Шерманов (для танковых батальонов 7-й, 27-й и 37-й бригад) и вооружении их 105-мм гаубицами. Источиком гаубиц были те самые "итальянские" танки. Специалисты из ТААС проверили орудия и пришли к выводу, что 13 из них можно починить. К середине 1956-го было восстановлено и передано в части 12 машин (Брезнер - Сусим абириим, 225); накануне Синайской кампании их таки стало 13 (СА, 378). В середине 1961-го по одной из таблиц их всё ещё было 13 (Брезнер - Эш лифанав телех, 135), а по другой 14, правда только 1 из них числился в 7-й бригаде; ещё 5 значились на учебной базе и 8 на базах службы вооружений (ЭЛТ, 98). Один гаубичный танк отметился в подборке шерманобульдозеров, фото датировано 1960-м.

Итак, до 1954-го гаубичных Шерманов в АОИ вроде бы не должно было быть ? Но вот фотографии с тремя стрелами южного фронта, которые к этому времени уже не использовались ?





1955. Утолщение на стволе по всей видимости означает, что это просверленный ствол, отремонтированный в Израиле. Пушки без утолщений, видимо, были куплены в недемилитаризованном состоянии.

wrong photos!

Firstly, photos 3 and 4 show Sherman Krupps! you can tell by the shorter barrel.
and secondly yes the "bulge" is a ring put on the drilling area to cover it to preserve barrel pressure thus letting the gun fire again, the ones that dont have it, used completly new guns purchased from france or italy i believe.

Thanks ! You are probably right, the barrels of no 3 and 4 look somewhat shorter. Also, the barrel of no 3 look completely cylindric, while 105-mm barrels are a little bit tapered. I wonder if the numbers of tanks which had Krupp guns are known...

Sadly thr only photo (that i know of) which shows the IDF number is this one, i am currently trying to track down the source of it, and i have went over 16,000 photos of zultan kluger in the national archive and i have about 15 thousand more to go. However we can make a list of all shermans starting with 12--- idf numbers and deduct from there ( i know 12503 and 12484 arent krupp shermans for example) but only with photos from 1949-1951.

oh also correct me if im wrong but google translate says you said on the first photo that its from 1954 and by that time the three arrows shouldnt be there? the three arrows of the southern command were used on brigade 12 tanks in general, israels shermans were given to brigade 8, then 12 then 7, and brigade 12 had them from mid to late 1949, the photo is most likely from "Army day" 1949 17.7.1949

also the search of numbers continues, we found this so far:

12484 = M-3 (Ruth II)
12498 = Krupp
12501 = M-4
12502 = M-3
12503 = M-3 Tamar(???)
12596 = M-4


with tank number 80424 being suspected of being a krupp but in the photos i have the cannon is unclear

P.S are you coming to yad la shiryons march this monday? if not im there and so if you need photos of anything id be happy to take them (however im not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination)

The text above the first photo says that "I don't any information about howitzer-armed Shermans in IDF service before 1954, but this photo is apparently earlier because the three arrows of the Southern Command were not used by then (by 1954)".

1949 makes sense, yes.

As for Yad le-Shiryon, thanks for mentioning the event, I have not heard about it. Thanks also for offering your help; I don't think I need photos of something specific.
