The RADOM Lightweight Bridging System is an inexpensive portable system, consisting of two to eight bridging units that can carry loads from 650 to 4,000 kg. It is intended for a variety of light bridging tasks and has been deployed by special forces.
A RADOM bridge is made up of segments of trackway with raised edges to form guide walls for vehicle wheels/tyres up to 225 mm wide. There is normally no interconnection between trackways. Bridges can be assembled in less than 3 minutes.
There are three basic bridging systems.
- The RL100 is a 4 m folding bridge consisting of four segments, each 2 m long and designed for loads up to 4,000 kg over rugged terrain. It is possible to add a central 1 m long plug to form the RL110 bridge with the same load capacity. Each segment of an RL100 weighs 32 kg, with each side of the RL110 weighing 40 kg.
- The single length RL200 has four segments, each 2 m long and is intended for use as a vehicle unloading ramp. Maximum load is 4,000 kg and each side weighs 36 kg.
- The RL300 is intended for use in mountainous terrain, being a 4 m folding bridge designed for loads up to 650 kg. Each side has four 1 m long segments and weighs 17 kg. By reducing the number of segments to three each side the span is reduced to 3 m but the load capacity is increased to 850 kg. Weight each side is then 12.75 kg.
